Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the causes of damp decks and other environmental factors aboard ships, and their impact on the health of sailors. These conditions were rampant in the cramped and unsanitary ships of the 18th and 19th century Royal Navy. The author argues that wet, moldy decks led to a host of respiratory afflictions, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and pleurisy, among sailors. Despite the obvious health benefits of dry decks, the Royal Navy persisted with frequent deck washings, exposing crews to unnecessary suffering. The insistence on these practices, the author argues, stemmed from a misguided belief that wet decks promoted toughness. This book will be of interest to maritime historians, medical historians, and anyone interested in the brutal living conditions of sailors in the age of sail.
