It describes in detail a method developed by the author to perform this measurement using a balance with such sensitivity that it could detect minuscule variations in weight. The author's method involves introducing a clamp beneath one of the balance pans to fix the pan in any position, making it possible to change the weights without altering the relative positions of the planes and knife edges. The author argues that this method eliminates errors due to the raising of the beam between successive weighings, which can't be considered to vary uniformly during a series of experiments and can interfere with the accuracy of the measurement. The author believes that while the method does not yet give results as accurate as some other methods, further improvement with larger instruments is promising.
