In this book, the author pens a remonstrance against the proceedings of an ex-parte Council, called by the Proprietors of Hollis Street Meeting House in Boston. The book provides important insights into the relationship between the pastor and the congregation, and the role of an ecclesiastical council in resolving disputes within a church. The author begins by presenting the reasons for declining the call of the Proprietors, citing the generality and vagueness of the Grounds and Reasons for the call, as well as the fact that the author is already under an engagement with the Proprietors for a mutual Council to deliberate and decide upon specific Grounds of Complaint brought against the author. The author argues that it is unreasonable to expect the author to answer to such vague and general charges, and that the author has a right to a specific statement of any offense before being called to answer. The author also maintains that the author cannot consent to be drawn away from the specific charges that have been brought against the author, and that the author will insist upon the fulfillment of the Proprietors' solemn engagement for the mutual Council upon which they have agreed.
