This book is a collection of problems in statics and dynamics, meant for the use of higher schools and colleges, and for the service of students preparing the first three days of the examination for the mathematical tripos at the University of Cambridge. These propositions are far from numerous: any sensible student should acquire an adequate comprehension of the truths of the demonstrations, so as to pass a satisfactory examination in the mere learning of the subject. Yet the ultimate value of studying science lies in awakening originality and activity of thought, and preparing the student for intellectual accomplishments beyond logical conformity. The author has arranged the propositions in a systematic form, classifying problems in groups, according to the fundamental idea of each. By comparing associated properties, the student will more easily develop a strong conception of each principle. The work of the author may fairly be regarded as a representative collection of the class of problems to which the University directs the attention of its members.
