Synopsis
This book updates a century's worth of scholarship by incorporating new research into some of the most celebrated skeletons and specimens at The Royal College of Surgeons. The entries describe and date pathologies from stone-age skeletons, the bones of Egyptian mummies, and the remains of medieval crusaders. Also included are the bones of those executed at Tyburn, and five victims of the infamous Burke and Hare murders. Through analysis of these specimens, the author sheds light on the evolution of some of humanity's oldest diseases, including syphilis, tuberculosis, and leprosy, and shows the ways in which medicine has advanced to meet new health challenges.
