Synopsis
This book records the accounts of several young Quaker men who were drafted into the army during the American Civil War. Their religious beliefs conflict with the violence and bloodshed, and they come into direct conflict with the government over their conscientious objection, seeking to be exempted from military service. The author, himself a Quaker, tells the narrative of how the young men were aided by members of the Society of Friends as they worked to gain exemption from the draft. The book goes on to relate the experiences of other Quaker men who were conscripted, and their similar struggles and difficulties with their beliefs and the demands of the war.
