Excerpt from Dunster Memorial: Service at Dedication of Dunster Memorial Tablet November Twenty-Fourth Nineteen Hundred Seven
In thinking of Dunster as the first president of Harvard, we may always recall with pleasure the tributes of two eminent successors, J osiah Quincy and Charles William Eliot. As you face the stage of Sanders Theatre in Cam bridge, the scene of Commencement and other academic exercises, on its right extremity is the marble statue of President Quincy. It does not require a prophet or the son of a prophet to forecast that the like space on the left will some day a distant one, if it may please God be filled with the figure of President Eliot. The high dis tinction of these two great presidents makes their awards peculiarly impressive.

This book revisits the life and times of Henry Dunster, the first president of Harvard College, whose resignation in 1654 due to his dissenting religious beliefs had a significant impact on the development of higher education and religious freedom in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Henry Dunster, who himself was a graduate of the prestigious Magdalene College in Cambridge, was a learned and accomplished scholar whose influence and instruction shaped the early history of Harvard College. Through insightful sermons and speeches from notable figures, this book examines the complex religious landscape of the time, shedding light on the struggles and sacrifices made by those who dared to challenge the established order. It highlights the courage and dedication of those early proponents of religious liberty, whose actions laid the groundwork for a more tolerant and inclusive society.
