This book is a collection of the economic records of self-supporting women living in New York City in the early 20th century. The author supplemented the personal accounts with information obtained from night schools and clubs, creating economic profiles of women who worked as factory workers, saleswomen, and laundry workers. Common conditions experienced by these women included low wages, casual employment, heavy spending on laundry and clothing, and lack of benefits such as paid vacations. Clothing was especially expensive for these women, with some spending nearly three times as much as they could afford on clothing items like shirtwaists.
