Synopsis
This book presents a persuasive argument for temperance reform through Local Option and a Time Limit on liquor licenses. The author cites historical evidence to prove that state action—whether repressive or permissive—has a powerful effect on drinking habits. The author argues that the Licensing Act of 1872, which came after a period of minimal oversight and a proliferation of licenses, was a turning point that led to a decrease in drunkenness and crime. This Act provided the model for the reforms proposed in this book, which include granting local communities direct control over the liquor trade and establishing a time limit on licenses. The author maintains that these methods have been successfully employed in other countries and can be implemented in the United Kingdom to reduce alcohol-related problems.

About the Author
CHARLES G.D. ROBERTS (1860-1943) was a noted Canadian poet and novelist. He attended UNB and was a professor at King's College, Nova Scotia. Among his many novels are "Heart of the Ancient Wood" and "The Forge in the Forest" both also reprinted in the "Formac Fiction Treasures" series.
