Synopsis

This book chronicles the ecclesiastical conflict between the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the larger Presbyterian Church in the United States of America from 1802 to 1814. The Cumberland Church originated as a schism within the Transylvania Presbytery, one of the founding presbyteries of the Synod of Kentucky, caused by a dispute over the ordination of ministers without proper qualifications. The Synod, and later the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, intervened in the dispute and condemned the ordinations as irregular and unconstitutional. This led to the formation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, whose adherents maintained the legitimacy of their ordinations and continued to operate as a separate denomination. The book addresses the historical and theological issues at stake in the conflict and offers insights into the nature of Presbyterian polity and its relationship to the broader American religious landscape.
