Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Obadiah
The principal reasons offered for the partition are (i) The enemies of Edom in vss. 1 - 9 are the nations who are aroused by Yahweh to execute vengeance upon their former friend and ally, whereas according to vss. I5 ff, the judgment proceeds from Yahweh, and Israel is the instrument for its execution: (2) Vss. '1 - 9 represent Edom's chief sin as his pride and defiance of Yahweh himself because of reliance upon his stronghold, while in the latter part of the book the punishment is visited solely because of his treacherous conduct against his brother nation, Judah. (3) The literary style of the two parts is entirely different. The first, abounding in striking figures, rich in thought, and concise in statement, is full of life and action; but the second, in marked contrast, is lacking in ideas, as well as vigor of expression.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the complex historical relationship between the Edomites and Judeans through an examination of ancient Hebrew texts. The author first compares two very similar passages: one from the Book of Obadiah, and the other from a different, more well-known, text to highlight the differences between the two. This comparison allows the author to propose which text is more original, and to posit several compelling theories about how the different versions were produced, which then laid the foundation for the book. The book analyzes various passages from these ancient texts in great detail, with a focus on syntax, lexicography, and history. A key takeaway from the book is that the so-called prophecy in Obadiah, foretelling the destruction of Edom by Yahweh, was actually written after the destruction had already occurred.
