I am aware that the importance of the subject should have placed it in abler hands than mine; for beside my non-pretensions to science and literature, I have scarcely leisure, at this time, to put into form and order even the limited know ledge I do possess, still less to study scientific or learned terms and phrases; I must, therefore, merely endeavor to make my discourse intelligible, in my own homely style and manner.
