Synopsis
Uncover how classic maize crosses revealed how seed traits are inherited across generations. This book presents careful experiments and clear results.
This historical study walks through the methods and findings from early 20th-century maize research. It details how parental races were crossed, how seeds were classified by starch content, and how progeny were examined across generations to understand heredity. The work emphasizes accurate records, plant breeding techniques, and the interpretation of surprising patterns in seed types that challenged simple maternal explanations.
- Learn how different maize varieties express starch inside seeds and how these patterns segregate in offspring
- See how researchers tracked crosses, back crosses, and self-pollination to map inheritance
- Understand how seed size, pericarp, and other factors influence observed traits
- Get a window into the scientific process of testing hypotheses and refining conclusions

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the inheritance of certain differences in the endosperm of various maize races. The author, a respected scientist, conducted experiments on specific maize varieties, crossing them to study the inheritance of seed characteristics like shape and endosperm composition. The experiments revealed that these traits are not inherited in a straightforward manner but are influenced by multiple factors, challenging previous assumptions about maize inheritance. The author's findings have important implications for understanding the genetics of quantitative traits and provide valuable insights into the complex mechanisms underlying the inheritance of plant characteristics. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
