In 1803, when he was 33, he was selected to go with Meriwether Lewis on an expedition to the Northwest. When the Lewis and Clark expedition returned to St. Louis in 1806, both men had achieved fame and honors. Meriwether Lewis was appointed gov cruor of Louisiana territory, and the same month, March, 1807, William Clark was made brigadier-general of militia for the terri tory. In this capacity he was also Indian agent, so that his services in Indian administration dated from 1807.
