Sir - The Equitable Assurance Society of the United States is one of the largest insurance companies of the country. It was examined! By the Insurance Department in the year 1901 and found entirely solvent. Its annual report for the year 1904 shows that it was financially sound, had a large surplus and was in a prosperous condition. It was therefore a great surprise to me as well as to the public generally 'when internal dissensi-ou arose in this institution. It started in the Equitable Building, the home office of the Society, in the city of New York, and among its directors and highest officers.

This book delves into a captivating chapter of American business history, exposing the inner workings of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, one of the nationââ â¢s most influential insurance companies, in the early 1900s. The author meticulously examines the companyââ â¢s financial dealings and the actions of its leadership, revealing a web of complex transactions and questionable practices. The book scrutinizes the creation and operation of several "affiliated companies," particularly safe deposit businesses, and how they were used to enrich the company's officers and directors at the expense of the Equitable Life Assurance Society itself. Through a detailed analysis of documents and sworn testimony, the author uncovers a system of self-serving arrangements, long-term leases, and lucrative stock dealings that benefitted the Equitableââ â¢s leadership while potentially harming the company's financial stability and the interests of its policyholders. The book ultimately presents a compelling case for greater transparency and accountability within the corporate world, highlighting the dangers of unchecked power and the need for responsible stewardship of financial institutions.
