Synopsis

Excerpt from A Free Lance of to-Day

Eyeing his white friend curiously, the Malay leaned for ward from his supple hips, so that his folded arms rested upon the matting of the floor. The dingy lamp-light falling full upon his face showed his bright, keen eyes. Glistening with suppressed excitement, his fierce mous tache twisted truculently upward, the gaudy colours of his Silk garments, and the swaggering peak of his head-ker chief bobbing and dipping with the motion of his head. A huge phantastic shadow on the wall behind him curtsied and bowed like an attendant goblin that smirked approval of his designs.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces readers to an era of swashbuckling adventure, following young Englishman Maurice Curzon as he embarks on a perilous mission into the 19th-century Malayan kingdom of Aceh. The excerpt opens with Curzon wrestling with the restlessness and boredom that has plagued him since his posting to Singapore. His chance encounter with a Malayan chief, Raja Tuakal, presents the tantalising possibility of a daring endeavour that will take him far from the banality of his current life. The author delves into the history of Aceh, a kingdom with a rich and bloody past of resistance against Portuguese and Dutch colonisers. As Curzon learns more about Aceh's struggle for independence, his admiration for their bravery and resilience grows and he finds his sense of purpose reignited. The author skillfully weaves together the personal narrative of Curzon and his Malayan companions with the broader historical context of the region, giving readers a glimpse into the complex political dynamics of the time. Themes of adventure, courage, and the clash between cultures are explored, as Curzon weighs the risks and rewards of joining the fight against Dutch aggression. The excerpt concludes with Curzon's momentous decision to join forces with Raja Tuakal, setting the stage for a thrilling tale of intrigue, danger and the pursuit of justice. This book is a captivating blend of history, adventure, and cultural exploration that sheds light on a little-known chapter of Southeast Asian history.
