This book is a companion to the author's previous work, Russian Central Asia. It focuses on the portion of the Chinese Empire outside the Great Wall, excluding all parts thereof with equal fullness. The bulk of the work is thorough, covering Chinese Turkistan, while the chapters on the Pamirs and the adjacent mountains provide further insight into the author's journey across them. The author's main objective was to travel as a pioneer and determine what openings existed for qualified evangelists to follow. This book is not merely a travelogue; the author’s experiences allowed him to observe the need, and help in further opening up remote parts of China to the influence of the Gospel.
