Synopsis
This book pioneers a method for analyzing and matching 3D curves in space by using fast Fourier transforms to calculate the least squares difference between sequences of points. This technique is demonstrated by matching curves in 3D space which define the boundaries of regions with contrasting reflectivity on curved surfaces, and is used in experiments to identify partially occluded curves and to distinguish between very similar objects. The book provides a detailed overview of the curve matching algorithm, and describes the development and capabilities of the accompanying range sensor which provides registered range and intensity images of a workspace. The book concludes by evaluating the performance of the algorithm.
