Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a preliminary report on the bituminous sands of northern Alberta. The author, an expert in his field dispatched by the Canadian government, conducted a 1913 field survey to estimate the possible commercial viability of the vast bituminous sand deposits discovered at the turn of the twentieth century. The report documents the author's observations and analysis of bituminous sand outcrops found along the Athabaska River and its tributaries. It outlines the geological characteristics of the deposits, their probable genesis, and the various factors to be considered when evaluating their commercial potential. These include overburden removal, mineral aggregate grading, and bitumen content and distribution. The report also presents detailed measurements and descriptions of various outcrops. While the author concludes that at the time of his investigation the bituminous sands had yet to prove commercially viable, he notes that with the completion of the proposed Alberta and Great Waterways Railway, the situation could well change. This book will be of value to economic geologists, energy policy experts, and those interested in the history of Alberta's bituminous sand deposits.
