Synopsis

This book, an early work on the subject of roadside development, gives practical advice on the landscaping of highways, roads, and streets. The author argues that by carefully considering and planning the landscaping of these public spaces, local communities and passersby can benefit from increased safety, comfort, and convenience. Topics covered include: planting material selection and care; seeding and sodding; maintenance of existing trees and shrubs; public utility placement and regulation; and the construction and maintenance of roadside comfort stations. Early examples of parkways and roadside improvement throughout the United States are given, referencing examples such as the Bronx River Parkway and the work of the Wayne County Road Commission in Michigan. Some of the themes presented in this book are still relevant today, with more and more emphasis being put on the beautification of our natural surroundings.
