Excerpt from Two Lectures on the Primary and Secondary Treatment of Burns
The following Lectures were addressed to the pupils attending my clinical class, and were intended solely for their instruction.
The principles which they inculcate I have endeavoured to enforce, by precept and example, for many years.
As the subject is one of very general importance,! have, at the instigation of an old pupil and friend, determined to give them more publicity. I have been further induced to take this step from the numerous instances of deformity and lameness which present themselves every year for admission into St. Bartholomew's requiring very painful and serious operations; the majority of which might unquestionably have been prevented, if the rules contained in the following pages had been attended to.

This illuminating book thoroughly examines the treatment of burns throughout history, while also looking forward at present-day practices and the prevention of burn complications. The author delves into the history of burn treatments, from the cooling methods of the ancient Greeks, through the use of stimulating applications in the Middle Ages, to the more advanced treatments that emerged during the 19th century. While the author acknowledges the progress that has been made, they also critically examine various treatment plans, arguing that many widely accepted practices are ineffective and sometimes even harmful to patients. The author then goes into great detail about the best methods of treating burns, with a focus on preventing and counteracting the scarring and loss of function that can result. They provide step-by-step instructions and practical tips for doctors and other medical professionals. The author concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding the underlying causes of burn complications and of taking proactive steps to prevent them. Providing doctors with actionable advice and new insights into burn treatment, this book will be of great value to medical professionals and patients alike.
