Synopsis

The Under Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the Department of Energy discuss their plans to redirect emphasis from risk management to risk reduction for legacy sites and contaminated sights resulting from nuclear weapons testing over the past half-century. Additionally, the Deputy Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration addresses the ongoing challenges to maintain confidence in the nation's nuclear stockpile in the absence of nuclear weapons testing. The author notes that the science-based approach to stewardship remains a difficult technical challenge, with the number and variety of weapons in the stockpile decreasing, and the time elapsed since the last test growing.
