Synopsis

Excerpt from An Examination of the Question of Anęsthesia: Arising on the Memorial of Charles Thomas Wells

This put an extinguisher on W. T. G. Morton for the time being, but fearing that further efforts might be made in his behalf at the Second Session, the friends of Mrs. Wells and son felt it to be their duty to move in the matter. Hence a petition by Charles T. Wells praying a gratuity in consideration of the discovery by his father, Dr. Horace Wells, deceased, of the availability of anaesthetic agents in surgical operations, was put into the hands of the undersigned, and he had the honor to present it to the Senate, January 3d, 1853. On the succeeding day it was referred to a select Committee, consisting of Mr. Walker, Mr. Smith, (the undersigned,) Mr. Davis, Mr. Butler, and Mr. Dixon. February 4th, Mr. Dixon was excused, and Mr. Hamlin appointed in his place.

This book examines competing claims to the discovery of anesthesia and ultimately considers the awarding of credit for this discovery to Horace Wells, a dentist from Hartford, Connecticut. In December 1844, after witnessing the effects of nitrous oxide at a public lecture, Wells hypothesized that the gas could be used as an anesthetic during dental procedures. The author presents evidence from depositions and other sources to support the claim that Wells quickly tested his theory on himself, having a wisdom tooth extracted while under the influence of the gas. Wells experienced no pain from the extraction. The author also discusses the subsequent development and adoption of anesthesia by other parties, including William T. G. Morton and Charles T. Jackson, and explores the ethical and legal controversies that arose as a result. This book provides a valuable perspective on the history of a medical innovation that revolutionized surgery and pain management.
