Synopsis
This book presents a re-evaluation of the widely accepted principles of Design for Manufacturing (DFM). The author claims that the current DFM methods are inadequate when short product development time is a priority for a company, and that under these circumstances, companies should adopt different product design tactics. Based on field research, the book introduces a new design heuristic to minimize the development lead time of products manufactured in high-volume processes. The author argues that simplifying the most complex part in a product, rather than across the board simplification, is more effective in reducing tooling and procurement times and, consequently, overall development time.
