Synopsis

This book theorizes the business phenomena of incumbents succeeding over new entrants during radical technological change. The author argues that focusing solely on the adopting entity can lead to flawed interpretations of why companies have more or less success when implementing radical new technologies. The author presents a multidisciplinary approach that explores both organizational and economic effects along the entire innovation value-added chain. The author coins the terms competence-destruction and network externalities to describe organizational and economic effects respectively, and argues that understanding how radical innovation impacts both organizational competence and network externalities experienced by customers and suppliers is key to understanding why firms succeed or fail in the face of radical technical change. The author provides multiple case studies and econometric analysis that ultimately support a conclusion that incumbents who succeed are those whose value-added chains experience the least competence destruction and obsolescence of network externalities.
