Synopsis
This book is a detailed analysis of the parameters that drive time allocation among three information channels by engineers and scientists, and the effect of this allocation on the outcome of their projects. The author examines five government-funded parallel research and development projects, plus four single projects, to determine how their engineers and scientists allocate their time, and the effect of this allocation on the outcome of the projects. The book investigates the relationship between time spent and performance, and the correlation between the degree of uncertainty in a subsystem and the amount of information gathering devoted to that subsystem. The author concludes that the efficiency of information gathering can be increased, and that one mechanism for determining criticality is an estimate of the relative uncertainty of the solution of each subproblem.
