This book introduces the High-Performance Computing and Communications Program (HPCC), a multi-year initiative whose goal is to accelerate the development and deployment of high-performance computing, communications, and software technologies for critical research and development programs in the United States. It presents an overview of the HPCC's five program components: High-Performance Computing Systems, National Research and Education Network, Advanced Software Technology and Algorithms, Information Infrastructure Technology and Applications, and Basic Research and Human Resources. The author presents the problems each component will address and the history of such programs in the USA. These include a discussion of ongoing activities, strategies and research performed by the HPCC program agencies, and a description of collaborations between government, industry, and academia in pursuing HPCC goals. This book provides an overview of the HPCC Program at a time when it has already made many significant contributions to advancing a wide array of fields that heavily rely on scientific and engineering research.
