Synopsis

Excerpt from Practical Text-Book of Plant Physiology

The arrangement of the subject in the following pages is an effort to place before the student a method by which a working knowledge of the physiological complex of the plant 'may be ac quired. The disposition of the subject matter entailed by this treatment consists, briefly stated, in the study of the particular functions and properties of the organism, in connection with the agencies and forces which influence or initiate them, and a con sideration of the general processes of plant life. To this end the first portion of the book, inclusive of chapters I. - VII., is devoted chiefly to the special forms of irritability exhibited by typical organisms, and the second part is taken up with a more critical consideration of the broader phases of the activity of the plant a treatment of the subject well adapted to the convenience of the independent worker, and to the exigencies of instruction.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, a detailed examination of plant physiology, is a valuable resource for any botanist or plant enthusiast. The author, a distinguished scientist, provides a comprehensive overview of the field, exploring the intricate relationship between plants and their environment. The book begins by delving into the fundamental nature and composition of living matter, establishing a solid foundation for understanding plant functions. It then explores the various external forces that influence plant growth and development, such as mechanical shock, chemical stimuli, light, and gravity. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the concept of irritability, describing how plants respond to both internal and external stimuli. This irritability is the basis for various plant movements, such as the coiling of tendrils and the opening and closing of flowers. The book also examines the complex mechanisms by which plants exchange and transport substances, covering topics such as osmosis, transpiration, and nutrient absorption. Additionally, it explores the processes of respiration, fermentation, and digestion in plants. Finally, the book concludes with a discussion of plant reproduction and the various strategies plants have evolved to ensure their survival. Overall, this book offers a wealth of information and insights into the fascinating world of plant physiology, making it an essential read for anyone interested in the inner workings of plants.
