And for the accomplishment of that intention, that is, to look up and behold the heavens, man hath a notable dis advantage in the eye-lid, whereof the upper is far greater than the lower, which abridgeth the sight upwards contrary to those of birds, who herein have the advantage of man; insomuch that the learned Plempius is bold to affirm, that if he had had the formation of the eye-lids, he would have con trived them quite otherwise.

Grounded in the 17th century yet retaining modern resonance, the author questions assumptions based on tradition and instead investigates the often-surprising truths of the human body. Challenging assumptions and overturning conventional wisdom, this book remains an essential read for those interested in history of medicine, challenging conventional wisdom, or expanding their understanding of the human body. It demonstrates that, despite huge advances in medical knowledge, the natural world remains full of mysteries and hidden truths.
