Synopsis

Excerpt from Interesting Roman Antiquities: Recently Discovered in Fife Ascertaining the Site of the Great Battle Fought Betwixt Agricola and Galgacus; With the Discovery of the Position of Five Roman Towns, and of the Site and Names of Upwards of Seventy Roman Forts, Also Observations Regarding Th

Had I ever imagined, before this work was be gun, that it would have extended to above half the size of what it has done, I believe I should have entirely shrunk from the task. But, hav ing once begun, one thing naturally suggested another, or one discovery made way for another, till the work assumed such a bulk as utterly precludes me, in my present state of health, from resuming the task of transcribing it. What by head-achs, and other complaints peculiar to a bi lious habit, it was even with great difficulty that what now appears was even once written over; so that it must necessarily appear under many disadvantages, though plainness and perspecuity have been aimed at through the whole. Although the first of these valuable Roman antiquities were discovered a twelve month past, about the beginning of autumn 1820, yet so low is the state of antiquarianism at the present time, that it was some months before I even heard any thing.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of Roman antiquities discovered in Fife, Scotland. The author meticulously documents the discovery of these artifacts, which he believes are crucial to understanding the location of the famous battle between the Roman general Agricola and the Caledonian leader Galgacus. The author goes beyond simply describing the finds, offering a detailed analysis of the Roman campaigns in Britain, tracing Agricola's path through Scotland and shedding light on his military strategies. He presents a compelling case that the battle described by the Roman historian Tacitus was fought not at Mons Grampius, as previously believed, but at a site in Fife. The book examines the significance of Roman forts, camps, and towns, exploring their design and purpose. It also delves into the rituals and beliefs of the Romans, particularly the worship of Apollo and other deities. The author provides evidence for his theories, drawing from ancient texts and archaeological findings. This book offers a unique perspective on a key chapter in Roman history, revealing new insights into the military campaigns and cultural practices of the Romans in Scotland.
