This book presents an extensive collection of legal statutes enacted by the Pennsylvania General Assembly during its first sitting from October to November 1779. The statutes provide an illuminating insight into the legal framework and social conditions of the newly formed Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, established after the American Revolution. The laws addressed pressing issues of the day, including economic regulation, crime prevention, and the taxation necessary to support the war effort. Some notable statutes aimed to curb inflation by regulating chimney sweepers and public auctions, while others sought to combat counterfeiting and peddling. As taxes were crucial for funding the war, this book also contains detailed information on the monthly tax assessments levied on Pennsylvanians. These statutes offer valuable insights into the challenges and priorities of the fledgling state and its efforts to establish a stable and just society during a transformative period in American history.
