In der Geologie nennen wir alle Gesteine welche aus kohlensaurem Kalk bestehen und eine krystalline Structur besitzen; die dichten, nicht krystallinen Gesteine, die aus kohlensaurem Kalk bestehen, nennen wir „kalkstein. Da der Marmor seiner geologischen Entstehung nach in der Regel aus dem Kalksteine durch allmähliche Umwandlung der dichten, nicht krystallinen Gesteinsmasse in die krystalline Structur entstanden ist, diese Umwandlung aber oft eine unvollständige und un gleichförmige war, so finden wir in der Natur alle Übergänge aus dem dichten, muschelig brechenden Kalkstein in den krystallinen, körnigen Mar mor, und der Geologe kann daher oft im Zweifel bleiben, ob er ein halb dichtes, halb krystallines Gestein noch „kalkstein oder bereits „marmor nennen soll. Im Ganzen sind jedoch diese Übergange aus dem dichten in das krystalline Gestein selten in gröfserer Ausdehnung vorhanden; mei stens befinden sich Kalkstein und Marmor in Örtlich von einander ge trennten Lagerstätten, jedes Gestein für sich ganze Berge und Gebirge zusammensetzend.
