Vereinzelt stehen da Cornelius Nepos und Phadrus, deren Schriften in einer solchen Gestalt überliefert sind, dafs über die ursprüngliche Textbeschaffenheit kein sicheres Urteil aufgestellt werden kann. Man wird sich begnügen müssen, fehlerhafte Schreibweisen aus ihren Texten zu entfernen, ohne den letzteren die orthographischen Eigentümlichkeiten einer bestimmten Zeit zu verleihen. Dagegen lassen sich die Texte der übrigen Schulschriftsteller in der Weise behandeln, dafs die beiden ersten Gruppen der Sprech und Schreibart des alten Lateins, welches bis zur neronischen Zeit herrschte, an gepafst werden, während die dritte Gruppe dem jungen Latein in seiner höchsten Formvollendung angehört.
