Laligne Allan offre autant de sécurité que celle du Cunard. Elle n'a jamais perdu qu'un seul navire, par suite d'une collision contre un iceberg, qui eut lieu dans le Saint - Laurent il y a une douzaine d'années. L'année dernière elle a failli perdre le Moram'an de la même manière. C'était dans le voisinage de Terre - Neuve, par un épais brouillard; à minuit le steamer, lancé à toute vitesse, donna contre une masse de glace. Le choc fut terrible le mât de beaupré fut enlevé, et l'avant entiè rement défoncé. Heureusementle Moravz'an, comme tous les steamers de la ligne Allan, était construit à compar timents étanches. Il put continuer sa route vers Québec, mais pendant trois jours il 'fallut continuellement faire fonctionner les pompes.
Si la ligne Allan est plus exposéeque toute autre à rencontrer des icebergs, en revanche elle n'a pas à craindre les collisions de navires, la route qu'elle suit n'étant fréquentée que par ses propres paquebots. C'est là un immense avantage, car neuf fois sur dix les sinis tres qui ont lieu sur l'atlantique sont dus aux rencontres de navires. Malgré l'immensité de la mer, rien n'est plus restreint que l'espace parcouru par les_steamet's trans: atlantiques tous s'efforcent de [suivre 'la voie la plus courte et la plus directe, et de là les terribles catastro phes qui presque chaque année causent la per de vies humaines.
