Bestand, wahrend die passive Immunität nach kurzerer Zeit ver schwindet, da die Antikörper im Organismus auf noch unbekannte Weise zerstört werden und teilweise auch durch Uebergang in die Ex und Sekrete eine Verminderung erfahren können.* Die Be handlung mit Blutserum eignet sich daher nicht, um großere Menschenmengen gegen eine Infektionskrankheit zu schützen, wie man es durch aktive Immunisierung, z.b. Durch die Vaccination, erreicht. Sie bietet aber den großen Vorzug, daß sie auch zu Heil zwecken benutzt werden kann. Eine aktive Immunisierung kann wohl in einzelnen Fällen auch nach der Infektion noch möglich sein, so bei der Lyssa, wo die Infektionsdauer eine sehr lange ist; im allgemeinen ist sie aber zu Heilzwecken nicht anwendbar. Ueber tragung der passiven Immunität kann dagegen zu therapeutischen Zwecken verwertet werden. Zur Heilung der schon bestehenden Intoxikationserscheinungen sind aber sehr viel größere Dosen not wendig als zur Immunisierung, zum Schutze gegen die nachfolgende Einführung des Ganz besonders ungünstig liegen die Verhältnisse in dieser Beziehung beim Tetanus. Aber auch hier handelt es sich doch um ein wahres Heilmittel, da das Antitoxin, wie dönitz2) nachweisen konnte, nicht nur das im Blute kreisende Toxin unschädlich macht, sondern auch dann noch lebensrettend wirken kann, wenn das Gift schon Verbindungen mit den Körper zellen eingegangen ist, die ohne Serumtherapie zum Tode fuhren.
