Synopsis

This book is an anecdotal memoir and social commentary by an unnamed narrator relating the oddball childhood and adolescence of his friend, Fil de Fer, with whom he shared a paper-thin wall in 19th century Paris. Fil de Fer, whose nickname means 'wire' in English, is a lanky boy, socially isolated and overshadowed in his mother's eyes by her beauty. She makes no secret of her frustration at having borne such an ungainly child, whom she alternately abuses, neglects, and exploits to garner sympathy from others. The author's examination of Fil de Fer's emotional neglect, the psychological toll it takes, and the resilience that he shows in creating a rich fantasy life as a coping mechanism, provides unique insights into the harm caused by toxic parenting and the creativity that can emerge from adversity.
