Synopsis
This book recounts the adventure in the remote island of Borneo embarked upon by Italian naturalist and explorer Odoardo Beccari in 1865. En route to the island, he stops in Ceylon to study the prolific plant life that gives the island its nickname, 'Serendib'. As he ventures into the jungles of Borneo, he provides the reader with a first-hand account of the indigenous peoples, namely the Dayaks, their customs and traditions, and the diverse species of animals and plants that inhabit the island's lush rainforests. The author shares his impressions of their culture, describing their communal living, hunting methods, and spiritual practices. Amongst many fascinating encounters, Beccari's most significant discovery is that of two distinct orangutan species—a revelation that challenges the scientific understanding of the time.
