Pure non faccio nulla, assolutamente nulla; questa lettera, che viene un po' tardi in ri sposta al tuo cortese biglietto, e la prima ia tica dopo un mese di quiete. Già, non potrei far nulla, anche volendo. Non sento più; e se, come dice il filosofo, niente può essere nell' intelletto che non sia stato prima nel senso, io posso stimarrni finito, e metter ma gari l'appigionasi in fronte, come sulla fac ciata d'una casa vuota. Che bella cosa, dopo tutto, non sentir nulla; esser libero e netto d'ogni cura del mondo circostante; udendo senza commuoversi, vedendo senza parteci pare, vivendo la vita dello specchio, che ri flette tranquillamente ogni cosa e sorride! Ma si, un po' d' ironia nel fondo ce la do vrebbe avere anche lui; per virtù, non fos s'altro, degl'ingredienti che lo rendono opaco. Quel po' d'ironia non è finalmente la meno fe roce delle nostre vendette? E il genere umano, salva sempre la immagine del suo creatore. Non meriterebbe di peggio?
