Dieses Licht beschien im jahre 1935, am Abend eines dieser Februartage, auch die Vorderseite eines kleinen, verwahrlosten Hauses in der Stigstraße. Bei der raschen Entwicklung der Straße stießen hier die Hausnummern zusammen, und die amtliche Zählung geriet durchein ander, so daß zwei Nummern 16 entstanden und eine davon zu 16a werden mußte. Eben diese Nummer trägt jenes niedrige gelbe Haus, eingezwängt und verloren zwischen zwei modernen hohen Gebäuden der neue ren Zeit. Das eingeschossige, unansehnliche Haus stammt noch aus der Zeit vor den Balkankriegen, als man von der Gegend sagte, sie liege hinter Gottes Rük ken, als man hier für den Quadratmeter Boden einen Dinar zahlte, als die Häuser in dieser Straße noch sehr selten und alle so niedrig, doch durch ausgedehnte Gär ten voneinander getrennt waren und mehr oder weni ger hervorstanden oder versteckt lagen, je nach der Laune und den Bedürfnissen des Besitzers. Damals wa ren die Hausnummern nicht so wichtig. Man wußte, wem das Haus gehörte, und größtenteils kannten die Leute einander, wenigstens dem Namen nach oder vom Sehen. Sofern sie einander nicht kannten, suchten sie einander auch seltener auf, und im Notfall fand man sich leichter als heutzutage.
