Synopsis

Excerpt from The Lakes-to-the-Gulf Deep Waterway: A Study of the Proposed Channel, Terminals, Water Craft Freight Movement, and Rail and Boat Rates

For aid in the collection and preparation of the material, acknowledgments are due to Professor J. Laurence Laughlin of the Department of Political Economy of the University of Chicago. For suggestions in the revision of the manuscript the author is indebted to Mr. James A. Field, editor of the Journal of Political Economy. So much aid has been received from traffic managers of large shippers, from officials of boat lines and railways, and from others, that it would make too long a list even to enumerate those to whom the writer is indebted.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This volume explores the constraints on the Mississippi River trade route, the Lakes-to-the-Gulf Deep Waterway, in the early 20th century. The author, a political economist and traffic expert, wanted to investigate the economic conditions surrounding the freight movement and rates and their effect on waterway development. The book offers a thorough analysis of the physical characteristics of the Mississippi River Delta; the construction and tonnage of watercraft and boat lines; and the interchange capabilities of river, lake, and ocean vessels at the time of its writing. The author concludes that given the state of boat and railway technology of the time, even were a 14-foot deep channel dredged the entire length of the route, it was improbable that ocean vessels would be brought to Chicago and that transhipment would still be necessary at either New Orleans or Chicago.
