Excerpt from Briefe aus der Französischen Revolution<br/><br/>Einem [buche, das nicht von irgendeinem nach träglichen Standpunkt aus über die Revolution spre chen will, sondern in dem die Revolution selbst sich aussprechen soll, will ich nur das Notwendige voraus schicken. Den Brauch, dem ich in den letzten Jahren ofter begegnet bin, gerade bei Briefbüchern eine Art Essay Vorauszuschicken, der einen Teil der im Buche selbst folgenden Briefe im voraus kunstvoll in kleine Fetzen zerreià t, um sie dann mit eigenem Kleister zusammenzukleben, halte ich nicht eben fur nach ahmenswert. Und was an Kenntnis der Einzelvorgänge der Revolution nicht vorausgesetzt werden darf, findet sich in den Anmerkungen jeweils an Ort und Stelle erklärt. Ich Will aber hier mit kürzesten Worten aus zudrücken versuchen, was dieses Buch mir vor samt lichen Darstellungen der Französischen Revolution vor auszuhaben scheint; auch vor solchen, die sich stark, aber immer mit parteiisch zerfetzender Auswahl und mit Vernichtung der Seelenfülle, auf die Briefliteratur stützen.
