I. Texte& Ou peut répartir les textes en trois classes: 1° Quelques rares débris des travaux de l'érudition antique. Aucun n'est plus précieux que les chapitres XIII - XIX du livre IV de l'0n0 masticon de Pollux (probablement empruntés à Juba), qui traitent du choeur, des chants choraux, des acteurs et de leur équipement, de l'édifice et de ses diverses parties, des masques tragiques, satyriques et comiques. Citons ensuite, par ordre d'importance, le livre V, chap. 6-8, du De architec tura de Vitruve, où cet auteur a décrit en détail et comparé les plans des théâtres romain et grec. Et enfin les scolies, les notices des grammairiens, les gloses des lexicographes mine féconde, encore que la plupart de ces textes soient d'un laconisme irritant et quelques-uns d'une désespérante obscu rité; 2° Nombre d'allusions accidentelles aux choses du théâtre, qu'on peut recueillir chez les auteurs anciens (en particulier chez Aristote, Lucien, Plu tarque); 3° Les indications expresses ou plus sou ventimplicites, qui se tirent des drames conservés.
