Los moros, al decir delos antiguos, gente infiel y descreída, fueron los primeros á romper la tregua, no obstante la fé jurada; y muy de calla da, una noche el rey de Granada cayó sobre Zahara, la hizo escalar por sus gentes, que mataron al alcaide del castillo Gonzalo Arias de Saavedra: por lo cual y comenzada la guerra, los Reyes de Castilla pu sieron buena guarda en todas las fronteras, porque no recibiesen daño de los moros, encomendando aquella muy particularmente á D. Alonso de Cárdenas, maestre de Santiago, y a D. Rodrigo Tellez Giron, maestre de Calatrava.
