Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on the Differential Calculus: With Applications and Numerous Examples
I have consulted a large number of university and college examination papers set in Oxford, Cambridge, London, and elsewhere, and many of the examples given have been extracted from them. Such papers clearly define the extent of knowledge expected from students by the large body of distinguished scholars who from time to time are engaged in conducting these examinations, and the present work has been constructed to meet these requirements as far as possible.
My thanks are due to several friends and correspondents who have kindly sent me valuable suggestions and lists of errata occurring in the first edition.
