The papers collected here have, for the most part, already appeared in various journals and reviews. I am indebted to the courtesy of the Morning Leader, the New Ireland Review, the F ortnigbtly Review and Messrs. Maunsel 8: co., for leave to re - publish them. In all cases there has been a good deal Of revision and re-writing, and an attempt has been made to impress a certain unity on the constituent materials such as may reasonably be looked for in anything that calls itself a book. The study Of Otto Efiertz appears for the first time, and is, indeed, as far as I know, the only account that has yet been given in English of that bizarre but brilliant pioneer. Topical articles on Egyptian Nationalism and International Socialism have been included because they give a glimpse of movements which, so far as one can judge, are certain to endure, and of leaders Whose influence is likely to grow rather than to diminish in the immediate future.
