Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of Elizabethan England, this historical novel delves into the tumultuous lives of Catholics during a time of religious persecution. The narrative centres on Robin Audrey, a young man whose world is upended when his father decides to abandon the Catholic faith and conform to the Church of England. Robin’s struggle between loyalty to his family and fidelity to his beliefs is further complicated by his love for Marjorie, a devout Catholic girl who encourages him to remain steadfast in his faith. As Robin grapples with this impossible choice, the author vividly portrays the clandestine world of Catholic recusants, highlighting the dangers they faced from priest-hunters, informants, and the ever-present threat of imprisonment or death. Through the intertwined stories of Robin, Marjorie, and other characters, both fictional and historical, this book explores themes of faith, family, love, and the courage it takes to stand up for one’s convictions in the face of adversity. The author's meticulous research and engaging storytelling bring to life a pivotal period in English history, offering a compelling reflection on the enduring power of faith and the human spirit. Ultimately, this book underscores the profound impact that religious persecution can have on individuals and communities, leaving a lasting impression on the reader's understanding of this complex historical era.

when if ever does it become legitimate to take up arms against it?”
