These lectures of Dr. Saphir were delivered in Kensington, at the close of 1889 and beginning of 1890. They are, in some respects, the most important of all his writings, as they give, in con nected form, his matured views of the relation of the two great divisions of the Bible. No preacher or writer of our day had such a clear insight into the spirit and connection of the sacred writings. This was the great charm of his preaching, which made it so attractive to many earnest-minded Christians of all churches. It was full of instruc tion, because it brought out the deep meaning, quite apparent when indicated, - for his interpretations were not fanciful, but real, - of the symbols and prophecies of the Old Testament, as well as of the narratives and sayings of the New. The unity of teaching he most clearly proved, and strikingly illustrated. His identification of Jehovah with Jesus can scarcely be disputed, by any careful and prayerful student of Scripture. It is everywhere manifest, in the claims and teachings of Jesus Himself. His distinction between monotheism and Jehovahism is vital, and clears away much of the vague mistiness of modern speculation.
