Excerpt from Longevity: Devoted to the Prolongation of Life
In subsequent issues of longevity, while the personal element will receive first attention, it is hoped that interest may also be aroused in the more general factors upon which longevity also depends.
Up to about ten years ago, while this country ex pended millions for the improvement of hogs and cattle, not a dollar was contributed to the improvement of the human race. The author argues that while scientific and medical discoveries have played a significant role, social, political, and economic factors are equally important in determining longevity. The book delves into various historical figures and their contributions to the field, such as Dr. Rush, who first proposed alcohol prohibition as a means to enhance lifespan, and Metchnikoff, who explored the connection between auto-intoxication and aging. The author also investigates the impact of social and cultural norms, government policies, and economic disparities on health outcomes.
