For many generations past the right Of mutual trade between England and the House of Burgundy had existed by treaties which had never been an nulled and as the Duchy of Burgundy, with the Netherlands, had been, since Charles the F ifth's accession, an appanage of the Spanish Crown, those treaties, our merchants argued, made them free also to trade with the Spanish colonies in America.
