The society began in 1853 as an association of New England-descended Clevelanders seeking to preserve the region's cultural legacy. The author argues that the society's membership mirrored the city's changing social and political landscape, evolving into an organization that reflected the broader national experience of the New England diaspora and its contributions to American culture and society.
